The whisper — a single white feather drifts slowly through a deep blue-gray sky, soft diffused light catching its edges in the otherwise empty open space.

You're listening for the wrong volume.

Path: Listen

Question

What have you been listening for that may have already arrived in a softer voice than you expected?

Thought

We assume the answer will be loud enough to interrupt us. It usually isn't.

"After the fire came a gentle whisper."

1 Kings 19:12

Reflection

Elijah was waiting for an answer. He had reason to expect a dramatic one. He had just confronted four hundred prophets, called down fire from heaven, and then run for his life into the wilderness. He sat in a cave, exhausted, half-hoping to die. And God told him to stand on the mountain because God was about to pass by.

Then came the wind, strong enough to tear rocks apart. God was not in the wind. Then the earthquake. God was not in the earthquake. Then the fire. God was not in the fire. After all of it, after every loud and obvious place where the answer should have been, came a gentle whisper. That was where God was waiting the whole time.

We do this too. We listen for the dramatic version. The clear sign. The moment of certainty. We brace ourselves for the wind and the earthquake and the fire because we have decided that is what an answer must look like. And we miss the whisper that has been speaking all along, because it is too quiet to compete with what we expected.

What if the answer you have been waiting for has already come, and it sounded like something you almost dismissed? A passing thought. A small nudge. A quiet sense of which direction is right. The whisper does not announce itself the way the wind does. It waits for you to be quiet enough to notice it. It has been there the whole time.

Pause

Take one slow breath. Whisper:

The answer may already be here. Help me hear it.

Carry With You

The whisper was always the answer.
