The work in you is not yours to finish.

Reflection

There is a particular kind of tiredness that comes from believing the spiritual work is yours to finish. The faith you wish you had. The patience you keep failing at. The kindness that runs out by Tuesday afternoon. The version of yourself you keep trying to become and keep falling short of. We carry these like assignments we haven't turned in yet, and we wonder if we ever will.

But Philippians does not describe a God who hands us a project and walks away. It describes a God who began the work and intends to finish it. The verb is in God's hands, not ours. The completion is promised, not contingent. You are not the contractor of your own soul. You are the site where the work is happening.

That distinction matters. Because if the work is yours to complete, then every failure is proof you are losing. But if the work is being done in you, then a hard day is not failure. It is just one day in a much longer process that has its own pace and its own gardener. Your job is not to finish. Your job is to stay open to being finished.

What would change if you believed that today? Not as a slogan. As a fact. The God who started this is not panicking about the timeline. The God who started this is patient in a way you have never had to be. Let yourself rest inside that patience for a few minutes. The work continues whether you are tense about it or not.
